The answers to these questions form the foundation of the entire work, without ever revealing the precise recipes or times of harvest.
2. Calcinatio: Transformation and Purification
After the drying phase, in which moisture vanishes from the herbs and the subtle inner spirit becomes concentrated, comes the alchemical act of burning, the calcinatio. Burning is understood here not only as a destructive step, but also as a symbolic rebirth, an ordeal of purification by fire which breaks down coarse matter into ash. Within that ash hides the "salt" foundation of the plant, until now invisible and impure, which only now awaits its birth into the form of pure alchemical salt.
3. Water as Solvent and Bearer of Mystery
Once the ash is at hand, the phase begins in which the element of water enters the work. Water is able to "dissolve" and at the same time to bring to life what is hidden. In this stage the life-giving mineral substances are released from the ash, and the raw form of the alchemical salt is born. Although the real procedure is only hinted at, the essence is clear: water acts here not merely technically, but also spiritually, for it brings movement and purifies so that the essence of the plant world can rise up in its authentic form.
4. Filtration and Crystallisation: A Mirror of Purity
In the final phase the liquid is freed of impurities and the salt crystallises into fine, brilliantly white or lightly tinted crystals. This process is the summit of the alchemical path to the salt: coarse plant matter is transformed into a pure substance, saturated with the universal principles of nature. And just as a crystal is the bright symbol of light and truth, so too the alchemical salt is the symbol of the balanced union of the physical and the spiritual dimension.
The Spiritual Significance of the Alchemical Salt
The alchemical salt from plants is regarded as the "body" or "skeleton" of a substance which holds the other principles together. In the hermetic tradition, salt thereby embodies stability, resilience and the straightforward essence which carries the memory of the whole plant and is at the same time capable of transmitting the subtle energies of planetary and cosmic influences.
It is a "wise" mineral, in which the hidden intelligence of the herbs is revealed, and with it, the resonance between the human being and nature. The use of such a salt (for example within tinctures, elixirs or other alchemical preparations) aims to bring about a deeper harmony between the material plane and the more subtle layers of being.
When the alchemist speaks of the salt of plants, he is not pursuing the mere addition of minerals or the enrichment of the diet, but is symbolically completing the bridge between the visible and the invisible world. For this reason many consider this salt to be the key to the universal order, to the understanding that everything on Earth is a reflection of higher principles, and that spirit and matter form an indivisible unity.
Hidden Logic and Philosophy
The entire process, from the careful gathering of herbs at the right astrological moment, through their purification by fire and water, up to the final birth of the alchemical salt, is deliberate and governed by hermetic laws. The alchemist is aware that in every step a communication takes place with nature, and at the same time with higher, heavenly forces.
Beyond the chemical and technical details, which are carefully guarded and not passed on to everyone, there stands here a firm philosophical idea: by the transformation of the plant into pure salt, a microcosm is revealed which bears the imprint of the macrocosm. The human body and the plant body are connected by an intricate web of energetic and material correspondences, and the salt is that "anchoring" point which provides stability for every spiritual and material transformation.
The salt won in this way is in itself a small miracle, which arises however not only through science, but also thanks to a deep understanding of alchemical laws. It is a tiny crystal in which cosmic geometry and order are reflected, a small emblem of inner accord and balance.
